Attacks in Nicosia yesterday, on the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Interphobia (IDAHOBIT).
Two incidents of homophobic attacks were reported to the MDC in less than 24 hours. In these two incidents, individuals were subjected to abusive attacks and beatings simply for daring to express themselves. The perpetrators are likely to be the same in both cases.
The complaints published on accounts in the NDAs state that the people who were attacked turned themselves in to the police. There, they were once again attacked, as the police officers treated them with aggression, homophobic remarks and even threatened to arrest them.
We stand in solidarity with the people who have been attacked, as well as with all people who in their daily lives are subjected to any kind of attacks because of their identity or sexual orientation. Every person has the right to identify as they wish, to fall in love as they wish, to love and to express themselves as they wish. An attack on one is an attack on all of us.
